Twenty-three Tawa veterans were presented with New Zealand Defence Service Medals at the Tawa Returned and Services Association recently.

The medals, which recognised military service post-world War II, were presented by Colonel Howard Duffy. Recipients represented a variety of military service ranging from J Force, Regular Force, Compulsory Military Service, National Service and Territorial Force. All three branches of the armed forces – army, navy and air force – were represented.

Among the recipients were fatherand-son Ian and Andrew Mckie. Ian served in Japan as part of J Force and was later a chaplain, while Andrew served in the medical corps, retiring as a warrant officer first class.
