The secret to a successful marriage may be simple: ‘‘Have a good row, and be over with it.’’

That’s Ngaire Allan’s advice to newlyweds and she’s dutifully supported by her husband Rob, who nods in agreement.

The Aotea couple celebrate 65 years of marriage on Thursday, citing time spent apart due to work commitments as the only low-points in their relationship.

Rob and Ngaire were teenage sweethearts, meeting aged 16 and falling in love. They married on May 3, 1947 in St Peter’s Anglican church at Paekakariki.

Their shared affection is belied by their self-deprecating humour. ‘‘We can bear with it,’’ says Rob. ‘‘We’ve got used to one another,’’ adds Ngaire.

The couple will celebrate the milestone with friends and family.

Inseparable: Ngaire and Rob Allan notch up 65 years this week.
