Appeal to help woman who loves life
A much-loved Porirua woman has the community rallying for her as she undergoes serious surgery today.
Mary Humphreys, from Ascot Park, will undergo 12 hours of surgery to close a wound in her bowel which has kept her in hospital since December.
She is no stranger to ill-health, with a genetic blood clotting condition already causing the loss of one leg 17 years ago and stints in hospital throughout her life.
A wide network of Mary’s friends has been fundraising to fly her two daughters Kelly and Melissa from Australia for the surgery and related expenses. The ‘‘ Amazing Mary fundraising group’’ has held a quiz night, pampering event. Next is a bake sale at Whitby mall this Saturday (9am to 1pm).
‘‘The support we have had has just been incredible,’’ Mary told Kapi-mana News from her Wellington Hospital bed last week.
‘There hasn’t been a day gone by that I haven’t had visitors. I’m into my fifth month and I’m still getting flowers and cards.’’
Kelly returned home last week while Melissa was expected to arrive yesterday.
Mary, 52, is modest about her popularity in the community. ‘‘I’m no different to anyone else.’’
She is loved by hundreds of children and their families as the leader of North Porirua Baptist Church’s Mainly Music group. Despite growing the group four-fold in four years, Mary never thought she could lead songs and dances.
‘‘I thought, I’ve got one leg and two hearing aids, no one will ever want me.’’
In December she was rushed to hospital with clotting in her bowel, but surgery resulted in an open wound that won’t heal because she must take blood thinners.
Despite being scared of her risky surgery, getting back in the boxing ring and back on her bike, is a motivation for the usually athletic woman.
‘‘There’s a determination inside me that says ‘you can do this’.’’
Mary is described by her husband of six years Dave as creative, caring, a fantastic cook and cake decorator and a vivacious lover of life.
The family is relying on prayers and a crack team of specialists to see her through.
