Grand but costly replacements

Four large magnolias were planted under the canopies last Wednesday to replace the six trees hacked down on March 29.

The magnolia grandiflora, much bigger than the magnolias destroyed in March, cost $1000 each and were about 15 years old, Porirua City Council’s horticulture supervisor Beckee Lunn said. They were planted in Hartham Pl North, next to the children’s playground.

This was the second time the council has had to replace the trees due to vandalism, Ms Lunn said. ‘‘They’re there for aesthetics and beautification, and some thugs have to come and tear them down,’’ she said.
