Chris Kenny described receiving his New Zealand Order of Merit ( ONZM) medal at Government House as ‘‘a great experience’’.

Kenny began coaching in Porirua in 1967 and is still active with the Porirua Boxing Club, producing regional and national champions on a regular basis.

He coached New Zealand at Oceania, Commonwealth and Olympic Games levels, is a life member of Boxing New Zealand and is president of the Wellington & Hutt Valley Boxing Association.

Kenny said he was surprised to be named in the New Year honours list. He said the glamorous investiture event on May 3 was more about representing his sport, than a personal achievement.

‘‘I think this [award] is good for boxing and for Porirua and I was very proud to receive it.’’
