Fullback shines in Tawa win
Tawa have leapfrogged Northern United in the Swindale Shield standings after a brilliant win over Petone on Saturday, while Norths’ chances of playing Jubilee Cup football are on a knife-edge.
Tawa kept the Petone Rec faithful quiet, especially in the second half, scoring a 30-point win to secure seventh spot in the standings. They led 14-7 at halftime and then blew the Villagers off the park with four tries in the second 40.
Star of the show was fullback Randall Bishop, who scored two tries and kicked 13 points for a personal haul of 23 points. Playercoach Steve So’oialo also got on the scoresheet again.
Meanwhile, Norths did their Jubilee Cup chances no favours by drawing 15-all with Wainuiomata at Porirua Park. They were up 15-8 with time ticking away but the visitors hit back late to break the home spectators’ hearts, as two crucial competition points went down the gurgler.
The result sees Tawa seventh on 20 points, just a point back from Old Boys- University and with two games left to play. Norths are eighth on 19 points but have Petone (18) breathing down their necks.
This Saturday, Tawa host second-placed Marist St Pats at Lyndhurst Park, while Norths face OBU in a must-win encounter at the Basin Reserve.
