Coarse fishing signposted
The popularity of coarse fishing in Whitby will be recognised by two signs being installed at Whitby Lakes in July. Dozens of anglers gather at the lakes at weekends to fish perch and tench, Porirua City councillor Anita Baker said. ‘‘It’s a big thing out here. They come from all round the region.’’ The signs will advise where fishers can get a licence, and outline the rules of coarse fishing. Coarse fishing means fishers must return their catch to the lakes alive, but taking fish away is not the point of the hobby, Ms Baker said. ‘‘They’re not exactly edible fish.’’ The signs are a joint project of the council, the Hutt Valley Coarse Fishing Club and Fish & Game New Zealand.
