Vikings still in the top spot
The Porirua Vikings shrugged off an average first half to record a big win over Petone in Wellington senior club rugby league on Saturday.
The shock loss to St George two weeks ago has been relegated to the memory as successive wins have ensured top spot for the Porirua side in the competition.
Victories over Upper Hutt this weekend and University on July 14 will see them claim the minor premiership and home field advantage in the ensuing playoffs.
The Vikings took time to get into the match against the Panthers at McEwan Park.
Although they shot out to a 14-0 lead after plenty of possession, they were pegged back and went into the break 18-14 down.
Coach Peter Rikiriki would have had stern words at halftime and the second spell was one-way traffic as the visitors ran in eight tries. Rocky Masoe and Jay Bolstad were outstanding as the league leaders ran riot to record a 60-18 win.
Randwick are two points behind the Vikings on 17 points.
St George, meanwhile, are destined to miss the playoffs after their entertaining 36-24 loss to Upper Hutt at Cannons Creek Park.
They stay bottom of the table on six points, with only the top five making the finals.
