Council to look at car park usage

Pay-and-display parking is paying off in Porirua.

Since 65 car parks were set up on the old Challenge petrol station site in February, and 39 added in Hagley St, $ 18,694 has been collected by the city council.

The take-up by medium to longterm customers was slow to start with but has increased over recent months, says PCC environmental standards manager Jim Sutton.

A review of the car parks’ usage and payment methods will be carried out this month.

‘‘We will look at how to improve the service we’re providing, to make sure we’re managing it effectively and one thing will be whether a credit card or text [facility] is viable.

‘‘We only have four [pay-anddisplay] machines, unlike the hundreds they have in Wellington and some banks won’t allow suppliers to use credit cards as it’s not cost-effective. But some people have asked about using credit cards and we’ll look at this as part of the review.’’

Mr Sutton says any changes to the service are likely to be made by council officers. The amount from the former Challenge site was $ 11,991, with $ 6703 from Hagley St parks.
