Year-old club gets some air

Tawa Basketball Club is officially off the ground.

One year after its formation as an Incorporated Society, the club’s premier men’s team is competing in the Wellington Basketball Association ( WBA)’ s Intercity Super 12, and three teams have just completed Term 2 of the C Grade 3 Midweek League.

‘‘ It took a lot of work from a number of people, but the turnout has been great,’’ says president Duncan Moore.

‘‘It’s really good to see people enjoying the sport and either staying on once they leave school or getting back into it.’’

To make the success even sweeter, the ‘‘Tawa Titans’’ managed to shoot their way to the finals of the C Grade 3 competition.

Unfortunately the Titans, who had previously lost just one of their roundrobin games, were defeated by rivals Techtime, 60-47.

The club’s Intercity team has faced a tough introduction, playing against some of the best club teams in the Wellington region.

They did, however, manage a win against Trentham, and have come close to success on a couple of occasions.

‘‘The fact that we are on the court and competing is really a win in itself.

‘‘ All the players are enjoying the level of competition, and are aware that in the long run the team will be better off for the experience,’’ says Moore.

The club’s objectives are to promote and develop the sport of basketball in the local community; help the transition from school to adult basketball; and to bring significance to amateur basketball in the area.

The midweek teams are eager to begin term three, and a women’s team is to be entered in the WBA women’s league.

Planning is also under way for junior teams.

Moore says the club is ideal for anyone in the north Wellington, Porirua and Tawa, but also welcomes players from the wider Wellington region.

Open training sessions are run at Tawa Recreation Centre (at Tawa College) between 8pm and 10pm every Tuesday, and are intended to provide a welcoming atmosphere for budding players of any ability.
