Vikings upset

Kapi-Mana News - - SPORT -

Porirua Vikings may have blown the chance to clinch the minor premiership in senior Wellington club rugby league, falling to the improving Upper Hutt Tigers 26-24 on Saturday. The loss, coupled with Randwick’s heavy defeat of University, puts the Vikings into second, behind Randwick on points differential. Defending premiers Te Aroha were too good for St George, crushing them 40-6 at Cannons Creek Park. The last round before the playoffs this weekend is a catchup round, with no game for the Dragons. The Vikings, however, play University at Kelburn Park and need Upper Hutt to upset Randwick to steal the minor premiership. Titahi Bay Marlins, meanwhile, have secured a spot in the senior first playoffs with a 34-10 over Porirua City Phoenix Black.

Elusive: Mana College’s William Sila makes a run through the heart of Aotea College’s defence during their 22-15 Beard Trophy victory at Porirua Park last Wednesday night. The win means Mana – who took the trophy off Tawa College last month – retain the symbol of rugby dominance in the Porirua basin until the 2013 season. The Beard Trophy was first played for between Mana and Tawa colleges in 1964.
