Parking’s a breeze
Shoppers and beachgoers in Plimmerton will find parking easier from August, when the village’s carparking is overhauled.
Plimmerton Domain’s train commuter carparks will be doubled from 40 to 80, and carparks along Steyne Ave and Beach Rd will become shorterterm to discourage commuters from using them.
The village has seen a huge increase in commuters parking all day since Plimmerton railway station was upgraded in 2010, Porirua City Council village planning programme manager Ian Barlow said. Some use all-day parks near the shops which leaves few parks for short-term visitors.
Parks at the south end of Steyne Ave will be restricted to two hours to allow beachgoers to park near the access way. Parks near shops on Steyne Ave and Beach Rd will have a mix of 15 minute, 30 minute and 90 minute limits, Mr Barlow said. The duration of parking will depend on what shop is nearby – parking outside the grocery store will be 15 minutes, for example. ‘‘You’ll park, whiz into the dairy, buy your milk and bread, and whiz away again.’’
‘‘Hopefully we will make a clean job of what has been an ongoing problem.’’
