Mary fights each day

Ten weeks after surviving a lifethreatening stomach operation, life is still a struggle for Ascot Park woman Mary Humphreys.

North Porirua Baptist Church Mainly Music leader Mary, 52, has been at home for six weeks recovering from her May 8 bowel surgery. She is still in pain and longs to be able to shop, exercise and visit friends.

‘‘It’s been a hell of a journey,’’ she says. ‘‘I have never ever had to fight this hard. In the hospital they prepared me for dying, not for living, and getting out and living has been huge.’’

To add to her struggle, husband Dave has been made redundant from the printing job he has held for 32 years.

Family and community support have got her through the dark times. More than 200 churchgoers and friends banded together in May to form an ‘‘Amazing Mary Fundraising Group’’, which raised about $ 7000 to fly Mary’s daughters and her grandson from Australia for her surgery.

‘‘It still touches my heart every day, what people have done for me. I could never repay it.’’

Life is still a day-to-day fight but Mary is getting stronger every day, she says. ‘‘I just want to get back out there and see everyone again, that’s my goal.’’
