Lagoon always in use

Kapi-Mana News - - OPINION -

Editor,

Silly statements such as Aotea Lagoon is underused and run down ( Kapi-Mana News, web comments, July 10) need to be challenged. I drive past the lagoon daily at various times, weekdays and weekends, and I can tell you factually that it’s always in use. It’s good to see such a solid level of community activity occurring, day and evening, wet and fine, 365 days of the year. It’s a credit to the council who maintain it.

However, not such a credit is the commercial proposal they are entertaining as being established at the lagoon. All power to this commercial venture but if it has such a compelling business case behind it, then let it buy its own piece of land and set it up?

Why should such a venture be able to leverage off what the Porirua ratepayer has paid for? A bigger concern is once it is built and later fails, as all these fun things always do as people move on to the next ‘‘big thing’’, it will be the ol’ ratepayer who has to pick up the dismantling bill. You can’t hope for much of a contribution from a liquidated company.
