New compost sites
A commercial compost business is likely to go ahead in Porirua after a successful trial of the concept in Plimmerton over the past two months.
Choice Composting director Leanne Pelabon has attracted $30,000 of investment after running a six- week composting collection trial, just short of the $40,000 she had been aiming for. The amount is enough to kick-start the project, but Ms Pelabon hopes to secure two more investments of $5000 each.
After abandoning a plan to set up her business on Broken Hill Rd, Ms Pelabon now has two smaller potential sites in mind: One near the Pori- rua City Council nursery on Sievers Gr in Cannons Creek, the other on the old Porirua Hospital grounds.
The sites will be much cheaper to develop than the Broken Hill Rd site and their land values are lower, Ms Pelabon says.
‘‘The amount of development work required for Broken Hill was just too much,’’ she says.
The next step is to create a proposal to the council asking for investment, which Ms Pelabon hopes to present in September.
In April, Ms Pelabon’s request for a $150,000 to $300,000 investment in the Broken Hill site was declined.
‘‘By the end of this year council will have hopefully approved the partnership,’’ Ms Pelabon says.
