Applications are now open for the 2012 Porirua Youth Awards. The awards were established by National List MP Hekia Parata in 2010 to acknowledge talented young people, aged 12-18, who are excelling in art and culture, education, environment, community, and sport and give them an opportunity to develop their potential.

‘‘We are fortunate to have a great amount of talent and potential among Porirua’s young people and this is a great opportunity to celebrate their gifts,’’ Ms Parata says.

‘‘I would really like to encourage our young people to think seriously about entering.’’

Last year 13 young people were recognised for their achievements – four received excellence awards. Each received $1000 in prize money.

Applications are available from www.porirua foundation. org. nz/ forms- porirua- youth- awards and close on August 24.
