Six murals on display at the Cannons Creek shops since the beginning of the year have been removed, to be replaced with positive messages for young people. The murals were erected on concrete pillars, next to the bus stop opposite Cannons Creek School, in January. They were commissioned by Streets Ahead 237, as part of the East Safeside initiative and to celebrate its first year as a charitable trust.

Streets Ahead founder Wayne Poutoa says the murals have been put in storage but the ‘‘blank canvas’’ left behind will continue to be used.

‘‘People want to see anti-violence and other messages there, a lot of organisations want to use that space in a positive way.’’ The murals could be put back up in summer, he says.

Removed: The themes of the murals, which have been taken down for now, was of a community together, celebrating diversity and making a stand against violence.
