Looking the part: Royal New Zealand Ballet performers, from left, Paul Mathews as the Grasshopper, Lucy Balfour as Rose and Lucy Green as Cinderella in the lavish costumes of the 2012 season production of Cinderella. With them are ballet managing director Amanda Skoog and TelstraClear chief executive Allan Freeth, whose company has signed a 31⁄ year $1 million sponsorship deal with the ballet. The Royal New Zealand Ballet has embraced the extravagance of the much-loved rag-to-riches tale of Cinderella, revamping the designs by New Zealand costume designer Tracy Grant Lord. The costumes, many embedded with white, pink and green Swarovski crystals, were the hit of the 2007 tour and this season’s are even more sumptuous. Cinderella’s tutu was the latest to receive an enchanting transformation – the four tutus to be used during the season each feature 90,000 crystals.
is on at the St James Theatre from August 2 to 11 before touring nationwide.
