So, fi­nally, the truth from [PCC strat­egy and plan­ning gen­eral man­ager] Moira Lawler, or at least a ver­sion of it [ KMN, Let­ters, Au­gust 31].

De­spite ad­ver­tis­ing that the planned cost of the city cen­tre re­vi­tal­i­sa­tion was $18.815 mil­lion, it was never in­tended that this sum be all that ratepay­ers would spend on the project.

It is now con­firmed that when our coun­cil ‘‘lead­ers’’ say ‘‘Ma­jor project . . . to­tal bud­get . . . $18.815 mil­lion’’ they in­tend to re­fer only to the amount to be cap­i­talised to the coun­cil bal­ance sheet and to de­lib­er­ately not ad­ver­tise the other $13.942m (if Moira is to be be­lieved) which they will al­lo­cate while the project is de­liv­ered.

Clearly these highly-paid ‘‘lead­ers’’ fail to com­pre­hend that if the project didn’t pro­ceed it would be the to­tal $32.757m that we would save, not just the $18.815m on which they have been fix­ated. How many other of our
