Inside story on ‘A Box of Birds’

Pataka’s annual Box Art exhibition has a tipsy theme this year – entrants must use a wine box to create their artwork, to tie in with an ‘‘Un-wined’’ theme.

Camborne graphic designer and sculptor Stephanie Drew is one of 40 artists who entered this year’s competition. Her piece, Box of Birds, plays with the idea of space by creating a window backdrop in the narrow winebox, which is filled with clay feathers.

‘‘The bird’s flown the coop,’’ Mrs Drew says. ‘‘It was great fun playing with the idea of ‘ outside inside’. It’s interesting because you’re given the constraints of a box and get to be very creative.’’

Creating the feathers took several tries to get the right look, she says.

‘‘I didn’t want to use real feathers – it would be too easy.’’

This is the third Box Art exhibition. Mrs Drew has entered each year. She is particularly fond of her 2011 entry, The Emperor’s New Boxes, which consisted of ribbons surrounding an empty space where the box should have been.

The Box Art Show 2012 will run from August 16 to September 2. Sales of the artworks will raise money towards an artist- in- residence scheme.
