Giant reunion set for September
Titahi Bay is going to hold the mother of all reunions over Easter 2013.
A committee has been established to drive plans for a suburb- encompassing gettogether and bring to fruition an idea conceived more than 15 years ago.
Co-organiser Vanessa Teague says a reunion of ex-pat Bay folk was held in Coodgee, NSW, in the mid-1990s, and it led to discussions of staging a large-scale event back in Titahi Bay.
‘‘ Earlier this year someone said ‘let’s do it’. It’s gone viral, plenty of people are talking about it.’’
Registrations close at the end of September so organisers can get a gauge on the numbers attending. Tickets are $100 cost, which the committee says is very reasonable compared to similar reunions held recently.
To ensure older Bay residents are celebrated, people over 70 can take part for free.
At least 400 attendees are expected, with some already confirmed from Australia, the UK and the United States.
The reunion itself will run over Good Friday, Saturday and Easter Sunday and start with a welcome from Ngati Toa.
A meet- and- greet at Te Rauparaha Arena will be followed by daytime activities, a supper and dance at the Kennel Club on Saturday evening, before a memorial service on Sunday. Local schools and organisations will be involved.
Co- organiser Henry Smith hopes a wall commemorating Titahi Bay people who have died can be commissioned, and for a Titahi Bay exhibition to be held at Pataka. ‘‘ We just want the whole event to be somewhere where people can socialise, tell stories, renew friendships – it’s about the Bay coming together. The memories that will come out will be pretty special.’’
On August 31, from 4.30pm to 8.30pm, there will be an open day at Niblick Hall where the public can talk to the committee and hear what is planned.
