Porirua’s Andy Davis has been awarded a Hiwinui Heke Maori Pharmacy Student Scholarship from Otago University.

Two awards for Maori students enrolled at pharmacy schools are presented by Pharmac and Nga Kaitiaki o te Puna Rongoa o Aotearoa (Maori Pharmacists Association or MPA) each year. Davis won the top scholarship of $5000.

Pharmac developed the scholarships with the MPA as a way to encourage more Maori students to complete their pharmacy studies, says its Maori health manager Marama Parore.

“The scholarships are a positive way of assisting the development of the Maori pharmacy workforce, and link strongly to our Maori Responsiveness Strategy, Te Whaioranga.

“Pharmacists play a vital role in helping patients understand how to use their medicines. We see these scholarships as a way of ultimately helping people get the best use of the medicines prescribed for them.”
