Puleiata not really greedy

Kapi-Mana News’ front page story on Windley School student Ainsleyana Va’aipu Puleiata making the New Zealand under-14 basketball side has received negative feedback due to the word ‘‘greedy’’ being used in the headline.

Her coach and manager have both contacted us, saying a story about one of the city’s best basket- ballers has instead become ‘‘demeaning’’ and ‘‘embarrassing’’ and she has been teased at school about it.

The ‘‘greedy’’ term was meant to highlight that basketballers have more scope to use the ball than in netball, a sport which Ainsleyana is a Kapi Mana representative as well. The headline was a play on the final quote in the story.

Her coach Brett Jarman has provided statistics that show Ainsleyana consistently leads the team in assists, proving she is far from greedy’’.

We feel the story reflected her achievement effectively and regret that a word used in the headline took away from that.
