Kapi-Mana News - - OPINION - ROBERT BRACE, Mana

I’m genuinely puzzled. KMN (September 4) reported the Porirua City Council has “endorsed gay marriage”.

What does that actually mean? Will the council be making representations to the Select Committee on the Bill before Parliament? How did the council obtain its mandate for this position? I don’t recall any consultation with the electorate.

I have to agree with councillor Shepherd that, whatever our personal views (and they will be various and deeply held), the matter is irrelevant for a local authority.

I now look forward to reading that “the council endorses marriage between a man and a woman” so that the rest of us can feel affirmed.
