Burglary investigation constable Damian Parker has these tips on how to keep property safe:

Set up or join a Neighbourhood Support Group and advertise the fact by displaying Neighbourhood Support signs and stickers.

Keep a permanent record of your valuable and/or identifiable property. Record the make, model and serial numbers; take photographs of items like jewellery, instruments and ornaments.

Make your property identifiable; use an engraver or invisible marker pen. The best thing to write on your property is your own driver’s licence number.

Have your house secured with deadlocks and lockable window stays if possible.

A burglar alarm is the No 1 burglar deterrent.

Ring the police if you see somebody suspicious.

Look after your neighbours.
