Toa women’s hockey team is on the cusp of promotion to Premier 1 grade.

The side have gained the top qualifying spot after an excellent season. Toa are one game away from being the first Porirua team, men’s or women’s, to play premier hockey.

Player-coach Lisa Bishop says,

‘‘This year our aim was to bring in new players and coach them to play at a senior level.

‘‘We have quite a few young players mixed with a few older ones so it’s a good balance.’’

Having played Premier 1 hockey for a Wellington-based club for more than 20 years, Bishop knows what is required to do well at that level and feels Toa have a great opportunity to be part of that. She played for Toa as a junior and her return to the club has helped them rise from Premier 3.

The promotion- relegation match against Indians is on September 22 at the National Hockey Stadium in Wellington.
