‘Equality is equality’ in gay adoption issue

Porirua City councillor ’Ana Coffey supports The Care of Children Law Reform Bill, which could give gay couples the right to adopt children. The bill, introduced by Labour MP Jacinda Ardern, would amend New Zealand’s 50-year-old adoption laws. Currently gay individuals can adopt children, as can de facto couples, but partners in a civil union are precluded under the Act. Councillor Coffey said Porirua City Council would probably have voted in support of the bill, had they discussed it. Equality is equality, she said, and these adoption rules come from the same outdated legislation that prevents gay couples from being married. She said the bill may engender controversy amongst the public because it involves children. ‘‘Everyone has their own ideas on how children should be brought up, and what they need in their lives.’’
