Joe Bennett – Double Happiness: How bullshit works

(Harper Collins) In his 22nd book, columnist and loveable grump Joe Bennett holds up to ridicule examples of bullshit fed to us in the name of advertising, politics and religion.

Bennett peppers his text with examples from New Zealand and beyond, using the Rugby World Cup, the 2011 election and the Christchurch earthquakes to illustrate the methods used by the powerful to pull the wool over our eyes.

I cut my teenage teeth on the anti-corporate manifesto No Logo, and have been known to force the brilliant Bad Science on my homeopathy-sympathising friends, so Bennett’s book was a bit entrylevel for me.

However, anyone keen to demystify the bullshit foisted at us a dozen times a day will benefit from this quick read, and hard-bitten cynics might learn a thing or two as well.
