The only free ambulance service in the country needs help. Wellington Free Ambulance answers 111 calls in Wellington, Kapiti and the Wairarapa for no charge. To stay free, it relies on the public to fund a $4 million shortfall in government funding, says fundraising manager David Baker. The service needs local people to volunteer a few hours to collect funds. The appeal will be held mostly on Friday, September 14, but some collections will be held on the Saturday and Sunday.
