The preschool kids at the Cannons Creek Fanau Centre were prevented from riding their bikes around the playground last week after vandals broke a perspex window.

Staff at the childcare centre in Bedford Court were distressed to find one of the windows had been smashed over the weekend of September 15 and 16, leaving sharp shards all over the area the kids would normally tear around on their bikes.

‘‘I don’t know why people do this, especially to a kids’ play area, it’s very disappointing,’’ head teacher Setani Feaumati said.

The centre recently had an extension completed on the outside play area, so for this to occur was galling, she said.

Precious resources, normally set aside to help the children, would have to be spent replacing the window.

On September 17, staff saw three teenagers climb the fence and jump on a sail that covers the play area.

Ms Feaumati said the teens had been identified and referred to police, who would ascertain if they were also responsible for the broken window.

Should they turn out to be the culprits, Ms Feaumati hopes their parents can be made to pay for the damage.

Play broken up: In a spot where you can pick up speed nicely on your bike, these kids had to play elsewhere until the broken perspex was cleared away.
