Seventeen hours of training per week have paid off for five gymnasts from Tawa’s Bigair gym who have returned from nationals with their heads held high.

The Twisters squad competed against the country’s best women’s artistic gymnasts at the National Gymsports Cham-

in Blenheim pionships month.

Churton Park girl Jessie Mok, 13, came first in her grade, step 6, for bar and third overall. She was tied fourth for beam work with fellow Twister, Lower Hutt’s Jade Maresca, 13.

The other Twisters, Whitby’s Jessica Eagle, 12, Johnsonville’s Amberleigh Leung, 11, and

last Tawa’s Madison Wilson, 10, showed their prowess in the four apparatus; beam, bar, vault and floor.

‘‘They did really well,’’ coach Carley Riach says. ‘‘It’s a very, very intense sport.’’

The girls will get a short rest period over Christmas but are aiming to go up a step for next year’s nationals, Riach says.
