Student wins youth award
A Porirua student has been recognised at the 2012 Foundation for Youth Development Excellence Awards.
Christine Philipo, a student and Stars peer mentor at Bishop Viard College, was awarded an Outstanding Contribution from a Peer Mentor Award for her contribution to the Stars programme, at a ceremony at Government House in Auckland on November 1.
Christine was nominated for how well she adapted to the school environment when she came to New Zealand as a refugee from Burma, her consistent support of others, and for being a great asset to Stars.
The excellence awards acknowledge the accomplishments of outstanding young people, many of whom have made massive changes to both their outlook and their lives, says foundation chief executive Marion Short.
‘‘These kids have been on a lifechanging and challenging journey, they have learnt so much, including new skills that will serve them well in the future.’’
The 20 award winners spent a day in Auckland.
The foundation helps 18,000 young Kiwis a year through Kiwi Can, Stars, Project K and MYND.
