Calder wins Welly

Keith Calder was unlikely to get too much work done last Friday – he was too busy dealing with congratulatory messages for his win at the Wellys.

The night before, the front man for the project to restore Porirua Harbour was presented the Wellingtonian of the Year award for services to the environment.

Although he had prepared a speech, hearing his name read out was still ‘‘an absolute shock’’.

‘‘For me, it’s recognition for what we’re doing and the many people who have contributed. Porirua is an amazing place and at its heart is the harbour – there has been plenty of work done to this point but it’s just the beginning.’’

Mr Calder hoped the Welly would provide an opportunity to promote the harbour strategy further. He paid special tribute to former Porirua mayor Jenny Brash and her successor Nick Leggett for their passion and drive.

He said the award was a proud moment for his family, the project team, Porirua City Council and the city.

Porirua resident and Maori immersion champion Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi also won a Welly award, in the education section.
