PO on the move
Porirua’s post office and Kiwibank branch will be relocated from the canopies area to Megacentre in January.
Its site at 3 Serlby Pl was deemed too earthquake-prone to house the business, New Zealand Post spokeswoman Jaimee Burke said.
New Zealand Post requires its buildings to meet at least 66 per cent of the building code.
The new site will be 2-10 Semple Pl in Megacentre, near Bond & Bond.
It is unknown how long the post office and bank will remain in Megacentre – it depends on the results of seismic assessment of the Serlby Pl building, Ms Burke said.
New Zealand Post owns the tower block but will not require its tenants to leave, Ms Burke said.
‘‘Our decision to relocate the Porirua PostShop and our employees is based purely on our own internal policy. We are assessing options for upgrading the building at 3 Serlby Place and will work through this with the tenants,’’ she said.
The post office will close for four days during the move. It will close at 5.30pm on Friday, January 18 and re-open at 8.30am Tuesday, January 22. The box lobby will close at 11am on Saturday, January 19, and open at the MegaCentre on January 22, 7am.
