Four year blindness

Editor,

So Gordon Campbell thinks the jobless figures are grim reading [Talking Politics, KMN Nov 13], he must be referring to the figures for Southern Europe and then goes on to refer to the current situation as four years ago – has the man been asleep for the past four years – the situation still persists.

He then reminds us that Australia’s jobless figure is only 5.2 per cent against ours of 7 per cent, of course he does not remind us that in past years Australia had responsible government. John Howard made sure he attended to the economy and development through the boom years, oil production and mining are the keys to Australian prosperity.

However, the Labour government of Clark wasted our boom years by completely neglecting any growth in the economy that would have cushioned us against the continuing economic downturn, for example, they tried to capture the middle-class vote by handouts to those earning over $100,000 per year and it did not work, they lost two elections, neither did the ‘chewing gum’ tax reduction which Cullen offered.
