City needs more rubbish bins

Kapi-Mana News - - OPINION -

I was interested to read Gloria Hazlewood’s letter about people dumping bags of rubbish at Salvation Army stores – not a nice thing to do. But it points up the whole problem of the Porirua City Council’s strange attitude to rubbish.

The number of public bins is being continually reduced. A single PCC rubbish bag costs $2.50 ($2.75 at Pak & Save, $2.99 at New World). The Spicer Landfill costs are exorbitant. Porirua is not a wealthy area, despite the high rates we pay even with a rebate.

Increase the number of public bins, considerably lower the costs of bags and the landfill, and our city may start to look less like a widespread landfill in itself.
