Writers’ walk leaps ahead

The planned Porirua Writers’ Walk could take shape this year, with the project now tied to the city centre redevelopment.

Designs and sites along the waterfront will be finalised soon, as the walk from the Porirua train station to Titahi Bay Rd around the harbour’s edge becomes part of a plan to celebrate the city’s literary talent.

Noel Hilliard, Te Rauparaha and Patricia Grace will be the first three writers recognised, with ‘stations’ along Wineera Dr.

Each station – similar to what is on Wellington’s waterfront – will cost about $ 3000 and could comprise seating and a sculpture or concrete square in the ground.

Funding was confirmed when Porirua City Council signed off its long term plan last year, with the project absorbed into the multi-million dollar city centre upgrade budget. The council’s city development subcommittee will thus have the final say on timing and costs.

‘‘It looks quite promising,’’ said Phil O’Connell, secretary of the Writers’ Walk Committee.
