NZ Post shift a bad decision, some say

Canopies businesses will suffer from last week’s removal of the central PostShop to MegaCentre, city leaders say.

Despite A4-sized posters on the 3 Serlby Place shop this month advising its move, letters sent to many customers and an article in the Kapi-Mana News in November, the first many people knew of Friday’s move was workmen removing the Kiwibank ATM last Thursday.

The new PostShop and Kiwibank opened yesterday at 2-10 Semple Place, near Bond & Bond. The NZ Post-owned building in Serlby Place did not meet the company’s earthquake standards.

Mana MP Kris Faafoi says he was not informed of the move and did not receive a letter as a post office customer.

Mr Faafoi is worried about the distance people will have to travel to reach the new shop, with no weather protection and many roads to cross along the way. ‘‘Not everyone has a car.’’ He fears the move is permanent and NZ Post plans to sell the Serlby Place building.

Porirua mayor Nick Leggett said the move will hurt CBD businesses at a time when the council is trying to inject life into the Canopies.

‘‘Taking out a major attractor of people when you’re trying to revitalise the city centre and putting it over in MegaCentre undermines what we’re trying to do.’’

The ability of Porirua residents to access services such as bill payments seems unimportant to NZ Post, he said.

‘‘It shows lack of respect for Porirua residents, to be honest.’’

Windmill bakery owner Michael Thomas said there was no consultation between NZ Post and surrounding businesses about the move.

‘‘ It’s totally a post office decision, and not even a local decision.’’

A move to North City Shopping Centre would have been better than leaving the main CBD altogether, Mr Thomas said.

‘‘It’s what you expect from a central business district. Take out your post office, well then you remove the centre of your town.’’

MegaCentre was the most suitable location NZ Post could find in Porirua, NZ Post spokeswoman Jaimee Burke says.

‘‘ The new location at the MegaCentre is about 850 metres away in a well-established commercial area with parking.’’

Post haste: PostShop’s move to MegaCentre came as a shock to many last week and will hurt customers and business alike, say Mana MP Kris Faafoi and Porirua mayor Nick Leggett.
