Playground a pupil’s dream

You can’t get the kids off Mana Montessori’s new playground.

The new centrepiece for the Whitby preschool’s outdoor area was finished late last year and cost $ 36,000. It came about through fundraising organised by the school’s parent committee and support from the community, head of school Nicola Dickie says.

‘‘The kids just love the natural environment, it’s challenging for them, with things like the logs to step on, testing their abilities. It’s just a beautiful area for everyone now and it’s due to lots of hard work from the committee.’’

What used to be a grassy hillock now has a large slide and a natural amphitheatre and quiet area at the back for the children to relax in.

The playground will be officially opened by Porirua Mayor Nick Leggett on March 2, kicking off an afternoon of activities and a Wheelathon in the Endeavour Park car park. There will be a bouncy castle, sausage sizzle, cake stalls and old-fashioned lemonade to sample.

‘‘It’s a real social event, giving all the parents a chance to come together and the community an opportunity to see the school and hear what we’re about,’’ Ms Dickie says.

The Wheelathon and ribbon cutting is at 1.15pm on March 2.
