Bril­liant day for cup

Up and comer: Martin McCrud­den, of Whitby, on his way to 12th place in the Welling­ton round of the Na­tional Moun­tain Bike Cup elite men’s race held at Mt Vic­to­ria last Sun­day.

McCrud­den was also sec­ond in the un­der-23 class, one min- ute 12 sec­onds be­hind Josh Parkin of Hamil­ton.

Dirk Peters, of Ro­torua, won the elite men’s race and Olympian Karen Hanlen, of Whakatane, over­came a hor­ror first lap to win the women’s race by more than three min­utes.

First Welling­ton woman home was Sa­mara Shep­pard, of Chur­ton Park, in third place, and fastest man was Tom Brad­shaw, who was sev­enth.

Co- or­gan­iser Mark Re­nall said the event went bril­liantly in hot, sunny con­di­tions.

The rid­ers loved the course.
