A na­tion­wide church cen­sus is tak­ing place in the next two months and is ex­pected to re­veal how of­ten New Zealan­ders go to church. Past sur­veys sug­gest one Kiwi in five at­tends a place of Chris­tian wor­ship at least once a month. Us­ing the slo­gan: Take the Pulse, the New Zealand Church Cen­sus, or­gan­ised by Mis­sionKoru, will be done by a team of about 150 vol­un­teers, each of whom will con­tact ev­ery church in their district. The main pur­pose of this cen­sus is to pro­vide new in­for­ma­tion to church lead­ers to help them plan at lo­cal, re­gional and na­tional lev­els. Be­yond the more vis­i­ble de­nom­i­na­tional churches, Mis­sionKoru ex­pects to find many new in­de­pen­dent churches of vary­ing eth­nic­i­ties which meet in mod­ern church build­ings, homes, com­mer­cial premises, garages, shop fronts and cafes.
