Extra on salaries

Kapi-Mana News - - NEWS - By KRIS DANDO

Is the cost to Porirua ratepayers for the city’s participation in a supercity review $15,000 or $93,000?

That was the question raised by deputy mayor Liz Kelly during discussion on budget increases to the upcoming draft annual plan.

Ms Kelly said her Official Information Act requests for costs had not given her clear answers.

‘‘I’m concerned there has been a budget blowout for us to look at regional governance. On the one hand I’m told it’s $15,000, which is what we agreed to but I have seen documents that say it’s more than $90,000. It looks like creative bookkeeping.’’

Chief executive Gary Simpson said the total figure quoted by Ms Kelly included an estimation of council officers’ time in finishing the project.

‘‘ In order to get the maximum value we needed to put staff time towards this and these extra costs . . . are their salaries. There are no extra costs for this council.’’

Councillors agreed to increase the budget for the governance review by $50,000 to cover contract support, community engagement, advertising and a website in the next 12 months.
