Annual Sportacular returns
Aotea College’s annual Sportacular is next week, with the summer version including T20 cricket, flag rugby and netball.
The concept is in its third year, and the school hosts both winter and summer versions. It is a chance to fundraise and bring back alumni to celebrate school spirit.
Sports co- ordinator Richie Anderton says it is a family occasion and is part of their strategic plan to forge strong links with the community. The last two Sportaculars raised thousands of dollars to put in new lights and resurface one of the tennis courts.
‘‘It’s great to have the alumni back on the scene; some of them recently gave time to put up the new lights, and it’s a way for us to celebrate sport in the school. We really want community participation and spirit.’’
This time, money raised is not going specifically towards one part of the school, although there will be food stalls fundraising on the day for the first XV’s trip to Samoa.
The event flag rugby, fastnet netball, volleyball and futsal. School staff and alumni will take part. There will also be a T20 cricket match and the first XV will play a pre-season match.
Special guest for the day will will be Olympic rowing bronze medallist Storm Eru.
