Young Porirua jazz exponent Leonardo Coghini and his band The Funky Pigeons will form part of the soundtrack at this Saturday’s Harvest Festival.

The event is being staged by Te Rito Gardens and Porirua City Council at the organic gardener’s base in the old Porirua Hospital grounds.

Coghini and his band were the pick of the crop among high school acts at the 2012 New Zealand Jazz Festival in Tauranga. The group is already busy fundraising for this year’s jazz festival.

Other entertainment at the Harvest Festival includes Aotea College barbershop quartet The Rookies, one-man-band The Ukulele Orchestra, Zone Dance and morris dancers.

As well as sweet beats, the festival will feature zero waste, composting and worm-farming workshops, a cafe and stalls, a garden tour, giant fruit and vege contests and a scarecrowmaking competition.

Over 250 people attended last year’s event, many of them lured by the hangi. Organisers plan to hold two of the festivals each year, providing residents with opportunities to learn about organic gardening for free.

A gourmet lunch will be for sale, and will feature as a prize for some of the punters who attend the workshops.

The Harvest Festival is on from 11am till 3pm, March 23, 6 Hassel Road.
