That was an in­ter­est­ing ar­ti­cle re­gard­ing Ngati Toa el­ders and Liz Kelly [KMN, March 12].

I was sur­prised to learn that Liz is the Ngati Toa rep­re­sen­ta­tive to the Porirua City Coun­cil, at least ac­cord­ing to Thom Kenny.

This is plainly not the case as there is no statu­tory Maori seat on the PCC. Liz is an elected rep­re­sen­ta­tive of the west­ern ward. I also find it amus­ingly ironic be­cause Liz Kelly was against the idea of hav­ing a sep­a­rate Maori seat on the PCC.

Thom Kenny went on to say that the coun­cil was dys­func­tional and it was los­ing the sup­port of Ngati Toa. As a mem­ber of Ngati Hau­mia in Plim­mer­ton (a hapu of Ngati Toa) I can state we have a per­fectly good re­la­tion­ship with Mayor Leggett and
