Stingrays, sharks visit

Sightings of stingrays and sharks in Aotea Lagoon are more common than readers may think.

Earlier this month, Porirua resident CJ Sheck was visiting the lagoon with his wife and son when they spotted a large stingray at the southern end, near the jetty. ‘‘You could see it clear as day, it was big and just gliding through the water. I was really shocked,’’ he said.

Porirua City Council’s manager of parks and reserves, Bill Inge, says there are a high number of stingrays in Porirua Harbour, which occasionally enter the lagoon through a sluice gate. The gate is at the south end and runs under State Highway 1.

‘‘Last week we also had some baby sharks spotted as well,’’ he said.

Stingrays in the lagoon have so far proven too elusive for cameras. Anyone who does snap one, please send us an image: editor@kmananews
