National List MP Hekia Parata says she is delighted applications are now open for the 2013 Porirua Youth Awards.

‘‘ We are very fortunate to have such a variety of talented individuals among Porirua’s young people. The Porirua Youth Awards is a great forum to celebrate and contribute to their gifts.’’

Ms Parata founded the awards in 2010 with the aim of acknowledging talented young people, aged between 12 and 19, who were excelling in education, art and culture, environment, community and sport, and to give them an opportunity to develop their potential.

‘‘I would really like to encourage our young people, their families and schools to think seriously about entering,’’ Ms Parata said.

Last year 11 young people were recognised for their achievements. Each received $1000 to go towards development in their chosen discipline.

‘‘We need to encourage and acknowledge excellence in our youth. Creating an environment of ‘ can-do’ attitudes is important,’’ she said.
