Naming Ascot Park’s artificial turf after its champion Bernie Wood has been supported unanimously by Porirua’s city councillors.
Councillor Denys Latham spearheaded the notice of motion to support naming the turf The Bernie Wood Sports Field in honour of Mr Wood, who died of cancer in April.
Mr Wood was the driving force behind the $1.6 million turf. Mr Wood’s family also supports the name. A decision on the name is likely to be made nearer to the turf’s completion this summer.
