The universal language of basketball united Mana College special needs students and Wellington Saints players on court last Wednesday.

Three Saints players – Rick Rickert, Jason Thompson and Joseph Webb – visited Mana’s Te Whare Ako unit to dispense some coaching tips and to play a friendly game.

The professionals led a shooting drill with 15 students, followed by some fast-paced play.

Their visit was organised by Mana College PE teacher (and Saitns coach) Seth Weakley.

Basketball was hugely popular among Te Whare Ako students, because anybody could pitch in and have a go, teacher Chris Edge said.

‘‘Sport is good for them, it gets them out into the community. They love basketball.’’

Game on: Mana College student Arthur Antonio, 20, right, faces Saints player Rick Rickert in a ball toss during a friendly at the college last Wednesday. Holding the ball is Saints player Joseph Webb.
