Gelato store a hit

Happy children of all ages filled Tawa’s new gelato store during its pre-opening taste-testing last Friday.

More than 200 visitors tried out Zelati’s gelato and sorbet last Friday afternoon, before the official opening on Monday.

Store owners Alberto and Rose Tuason required extra help from their daughters Hillary, 18, Angela, 16, and Faith, 8, to keep up with visitors, Mr Tuason said.

The day was a highlight for the couple, who moved to New Zealand from the Philippines 20 years ago.

Mr Tuason also has Chinese and Spanish roots.

He worked in IT and ran several businesses before electing the ‘‘happier’’ lifestyle of gelato-making four years ago.

‘‘ I just wanted variety. I thought it’s a happier thing to do,’’ he said.

Mr Tuason developed his love of food while working at his father’s Filipino restaurant in his late teens.

He travelled to Italy to train as a qualified gelato chef, called a maestro gelatiere and sorbetiere.

Four years later, the family’s Zelati gelato and sorbet range is available at New World Thorndon and Wakefield St, Moore Wilson’s in Tory St and Keneperu, and at their Zelati Freezeria and shop on Tawa’s Main Rd.

They also sold 300 ice-cream tubs at the Wellington Food Show in May.

Mr Tuason said gelato was a healthier alternative to icecream because it had less fat and the gelato was 65 to 70 per cent organic.

‘‘Our Zelati gelato and sorbet range is all made from scratch locally at the Freezeria in Tawa, using real, premium- selected ingredients.

‘‘Our products are all not only delicious, but nutritious. They are all gluten-free, egg-free and free from artificial additives,’’ he said. ‘‘Our sorbet is dairy-free and our gelato is made from organic milk.’’

The store offers eight flavours, and will continue to experiment with flavours, such as feijoa, passionfruit, honeycomb and limone, which may be introduced in spring.

It also plans to sell Spanish style hot chocolate at the shop, a favourite in the Philippines.

Cheered up: Ellie Rowley tests the sorbet with grandma Lyn Wright after a trip to the doctor.
